Tree Stump Home
Using cedar stumps that washed ashore as siding, this small and unique home was built to blend right in with its surroundings.
Terry Anderson wanted his house to blend with its surroundings, so he used local materials for siding. Anderson lives by Lake Pend Oreille, in northern Idaho, and the forested beach in front of his house is strewn with cedar stumps that wash ashore. He split several with a chainsaw, and applied them to the base of the building. Anderson hollowed these bleached buttresses to form planter boxes. A circle of smaller stump-planters surrounds the patio, which is paved with cedar rounds. The rest of the house is cloaked in barkcovered log slabs; wild strawberries flourish atop the sod roof.
