I am a home renovator who spends all of his time updating and repairing existing homes. My biggest challenge is protecting the living space. I have used carpet film for years with synthetic carpets but have no good solution for wool. I am about to start my next project (two washrooms) and have three flights of wool carpeted stairs to protect and various landings. I find that drop sheets are just too much of a hastle, expecially with stairs. Any help will be appreciated.

I use something I call homasote. I hope I spelled that right. It is a grey sheet of what looks like recycled paper about 1/2" thick. It absorbs shock and spills and stays rigid. I usually get it from HD.
assuming these are wool runners and not wall to wall, you could cut pieces of 1/4" masonite hardboard to fit riser and runner, duct tape joints together. then blue tape to treads.

In this particular situation it is wall to wall. Your suggestion for runners is good. Does the constant pounding of feet combined with the give in the covered carpet not cause the blue tape to continuely fail? I will give it a go with a runner job.
blue tape will hold to finished wood but not wool carpet, i'd try reg. masking tape or duct tape to the carpet in an inconspicuos area.

Why can you not use the carpet film over a wool carpet?
Never thought about it or seen any warnings against before but we use quite a bit of the carpet sheild.
Thanks Neil
"Q Why can't you put Carpet Protection on natural fiber (wool) carpet?A Due to the differences in natural fibers (levels of oils, enzymes, etc.) we can't guarantee how the adhesive will react. Some Berbers contain natural fibers."

You might try contacting these people--I did and they sent me samples of their floor protection sheets. They may have something that would work for you. The company name is KS and their toll free phone # is 888-578-5573 and their web site is http://www.dropcloth.com . It is basically similar to felt with a plastic film backing. They may have a suggestion, or a special product for what you need to do.
Maybe you could get something like Velcro that would stick to the wool carpet and glue it to the back of some protective sheets.
They have great stuff. I'd use it for this in a heartbeat!

I have visited their web site and will give them a call today. It looks promising. Thanks to all.

Is the wool carpet a berber or cut pile? If it is cut pile could you mechanicaly fasten (screws nails) wood or hard board treads over a canvas runner to protect the treads and risers?Garett
I would love to follow this suggestion however the client would have nothing to do with any mechanical fasteners going into the stairs even though they are covered. Thanks for the note.

Have you tried surface pro from wwwdropcloth.com ?
