This year’s editor’s choice award goes to a well-crafted new home on Orcas Island, Wash., designed by Susan Stoltz and David Kau. Perched on a precipice 1200 ft. above sea level, this charming home is equally suited to its natural surroundings and to its owners’ distinctive sensibilities. It is at once subtle and sophisticated, a brilliant balance of wide-open views that take advantage of precious sunny days and comfortable nooks that offer a retreat when the day is not so bright. The floor plan responds to the site as well, with the home’s private spaces just inside the entry, allowing the main living area-the great room in the back of the house-full access to the best views. Perhaps most striking about the house is the individuality expressed throughout the interior in its custom hardware, live-edge surfaces, and traditional Hawaiian daybed, or hike’e, tucked into the den. The owners call their house Lanihuli, which in Hawaiian means “swirling heavens,” a fitting moniker for this home that captures the best moments from both the sun and the clouds.
