I enjoyed your article Running New Wires Through Old Walls. Here’s a variation on the weighted-line technique, which I find works well for running wire through an enclosed wall to a location one floor down. From below, I drill a 1/2-in.-dia. hole through the bottom plate into the stud bay. Through this hole, I insert a telescopic pointer that has a magnet on the end. When my partner lowers the weighted line into the wall cavity, I easily move the pointer around until it captures the chain on the end of the line. I then am able to pull the chain through the hole to attach the new wire so that my partner can pull it up.

I've used a similar technique, but not with chain. I use a beaded pie weight chain - about 9 bucks from Jet.com. It's 6' long and has a nice heft, unlike beaded light pull chain. Plus, it's very supple, and has no sharp points to catch. Just don't steal your wive's - that was my first mistake. 9 bucks is cheap compared to an enraged Pie Princess!
I'm not sure whether to envy you or to offer my condolences for having two wives.
Dear Robert(Condie),
Thank you! You made a rough job easier. To Suburbanguy, your humor is being wasted, thanks for the chuckle!
