Many of the jobs I do are short term — two days or less — and they always require a truckload of tools and materials. The sawhorses, which would be nice to have, are often left at the shop. So I came up with a set of horses that fold up and fit behind the seat of my truck.
As shown in the drawing, I use 2x4s with metal sawhorse brackets. I screw the brackets to the legs, but not to the rail, so that the rail can be easily removed. At the bottom of one leg in each set of legs I attach a 1×4 with a hinge. Then I fold the 1×4 down until it is perpendicular to the opposite leg, where a slot receives the 1×4. This forces the bottom of the legs apart and causes the top of the sawhorse bracket to bite into the rail. This assembly can be set up and taken down in seconds, and it’s surprisingly strong.
