As a description, our home is nestled in a pine grove on a south-facing hillside, overlooking a 7 acre pond. Our goal was to have our home blend seamlessly into its wooded surrounding using a palette of natural materials like cedar and stone.
Our design objectives included the use of passive solar strategies, structural glass floor panels, and a series of long-span beams that provide for a two story cathedral space over the living and dining rooms. Calculated roof overhangs to the south, allow for summertime sun protection while optimizing wintertime solar gain.
Given the steep terrain, a series of terraced stone patios provide functional spaces for social gatherings that complement the custom gunite pool, waterfalls and spa. To extend the outdoor season, a Rumford fireplace adds a unique and useful design feature to the exterior architecture.
With an active family, we also created a 1,000 sq. ft. Sport Court complete with 12 ft. ceilings, rope swings, basketball hoop, hockey goals and lacrosse pitch-backs.
It is interesting to note that both the FindHomebuilding headquarters and our home are located in Newtown, CT.
