Rather than demolish and recreate a new fireplace, the existing brickwork was repointed to minimize the vertical grout joints. The brickwork was then painted with a two tone paint scheme, using a warm taupe to accentuate the horizontal lines. Stainless steel cladding was afixed to the existing sloped pilasters, creating an entirely new look to this focal area. A slab of Black Indian Granite, left over from our Kitchen renovation, “floats” in the firebox, holding a bio-fuel burner. When lit, the burner provides a dancing flame that does not require ventilation, saving on HVAC costs. Finishing touches include re-tiling the hearth with porcelain tiles with a dark gray linear pattern, and giving the mantel a new coat of stain.
