For ease of use, a microwave is typically installed between an adult’s chest height and head height, but this takes up space that otherwise could be used by a cabinet, a window, or a ducted range hood. There are some good arguments for installing them lower, but that placement can make them awkward to operate.
Several companies now offer microwaves with the cooking base mounted on drawer slides, making them more practical to place beneath a counter. Several brands are available, but Sharp’s 24-in.-wide model stands out for its price. At $770, it’s roughly half the price of most of its competitors. The display is angled upward for easier viewing, and the motorized drawer slide can be engaged by gently pushing or pulling on the handle or by pressing an open/close button. It’s available in black, white, and stainless steel.
