While bending one 8d nail after another trying to install an oak window skirt without predrilling, I was mercifully shown a valuable trick by an experienced carpenter. He took one of the nails, rubbed it quickly through his hair and then drove it through the oak with no bending at all. He assured me that even bald carpenters can strike oil by using the side of their nose.
