A drywall screw through a small square of plywood makes a handy stilt to prop up work while finish is applied. When I paint a door, for instance, I place a pair of stilts on the floor to support the door, and another one against the wall near the top of the door (see drawing).

Sounds like a good idea.
Just don't leave them lying around on the floor...worse than Legos to step on!
