Whenever I have to carry lumber that extends beyond the bed of my pickup, I just tie on my Velcro flag. I knot one corner of a red bandana around a strip of Velcro about 1 ft. long, and then tighten the Velcro around a projecting stick of lumber. This is easier than driving a nail into the lumber or tying a string around it to hold the flag, and the Velcro hangs on tight — even at highway speeds.

Nothing like a little bit of Velcro and a Red Bandana! They're Both cheap and usually Handy and Useful for More than Flagging Lumber! Heck, I'm usually Wearing a Red Bandana on My Head to Keep the Sweat out! This's a Great Way to Dry one out!
I just gab a handfull of the red plastic flags at the big box store and put them, along with an old staple gun, in a plastic ammo can, that I keep in the truck. They're basically free and work on sheet goods as well.
