A good way to fill butt joints in molding that will be painted is to cut some long, thin wedges on the tablesaw. The wedges can then be angled into the gaps, cut off flush with a sharp knife and then glued in place — no need for sloppy caulking or wood filler. Of course it’s better to make the joint thin as a razor line in the first place, but things don’t always work out that way.
