Instead of plugging a partially used tube of caulk with a nail, or capping it with a wire nut, 1 keep the remaining contents from hardening with a piece of Romex wire sheathing. First I pull the wire out of a 5 in. or 6 in. Romex offcut. Then I shove the plastic sheath over the caulk-tube nozzle and pump a little caulk into the sheath. When I pull it off the nozzle weeks later, the rest of the caulk in the tube is still fresh. The sheathing also works as a nozzle extension for getting at hard-to-reach crevices.

I saw your post about clogged caulk tubes, and I recently created a product that solves the issue of clogged caulk tubes and clogged caulk tube nozzles. This is not to prevent drying, but to address the issue when none of the other methods to prevent clogging, or unclogging fail. It replaces the top of the caulk tube after you cut off the clogged section. You can check it out at http://www.tubeanew.com.
