On a recent remodel project I had to remove the wall and ceiling sheathing over a stairwell. Before I started to install the new finishes, I wanted to clean up the dust and cobwebs left on the rafters. Because the area was above the stairs, it was tough to comfortably reach the framing members — all my ladder setups were quite precarious. My solution was to get a length of sump-pump discharge hose. I bought a 24-ft. roll of it at the local lumberyard for less than $5, and I taped it to the end of my shop vacuum hose. I affixed the end of the hose to a long furring strip, allowing me to poke the hose into the dirty ceiling nooks and crannies from the safety of the stair landing.

I use a 10 foot long piece of PE pipe to do the same thing.
