Sometimes an electric outlet or switch box has to go between a couple of studs that are so close together, there’s no room for a hammer or a drill bit. In this case, I reach for a C-clamp. As shown in the drawing, a clamp can be used to squeeze a nail into the stud. For good bearing, 1 use roofing nails during this operation. Occasionally, I find it’s necessary to drill holes in the side of the box for the nails.

You have got to be kidding. There are UL listed boxes with side screws that will mount perfectly in this situation. This tip belongs in the 1930 edition.
