You’ve got to have a decent pair of tweezers to extract a splinter, but sometimes it’s tough to see your target with the naked eye. A loupe can make all the difference in trying to locate a splinter. A loupe is a small magnifying glass that can easily fit into a first-aid kit. Loupes typically come in 5x, 8x and 10x powers and cost about $15. Art-supply stores and photography shops are good places to find them.

That is a good approach, but sometimes good lighting is also needed. I found (on Amazon) a pair of precision super fine-pointed tweezers with a magnifying glass AND an LED light. The points are sharp enough to help dig out that deeply embedded splinter as well.
Harbor Freight sells a cheap loupe that will clip on to your safety glasses.
It seems like it could be tricky to hold the loop and a set of tweezers while working on a splinter which is probably in one hand or the other. I like the idea of one that can clip onto a pair of glasses as suggested by Bobbomax. If anyone has access to a hyperdermic needle, I have found it one of the most useful tools in my "splinter kit." They are very sharp and the bevel allows you to cut the skin to get under the splinter.
