The truck was already overdue when it pulled up with its load of roughsawn 6×12 timbers. Even though we’d ordered surfaced material, we weren’t going to refuse delivery; we’d just have to deal with it. We thought about using our 7-in. grinder and the little 3-in. power planer that we had on site, but figured that it would take forever to dress the beams with these tools, and that we’d likely trash them in the process.
Solution: we rented a floor sander. Using various grits of paper, we walked it back and forth on the timbers. It did the job in almost no time, and we saved our other tools for minor touch-ups.
