Although my carpenter’s belt has nice pockets for pencils, my instinct is to stick my carpenter’s pencil in my shirt pocket. By mating my pencil with a clothespin, as shown in the drawing, I devised a pencil that stays in my pocket even when I’m crawling around under a house. Cut the notch with a file or a knife.
