When replacing a fence, it is often convenient (and sometimes necessary) to put the new posts in the old holes. The problem, of course, is getting out the old posts. My solution is to lever them out of the ground, as shown in the drawing. I make a row of 1-in. deep passes with my circular saw in the side of the post and then knock out the chips to make a dado for the lever. Then I use a post offcut as a fulcrum and a length of post stock for the lever.
