In order to save ourselves some expensive plaster repairs, my partner and I decided to route our new electrical wires directly from the basement to the attic. We bored holes into the same stud cavity from above and below, but we had a terrible time trying to fish the new wire past the joist and the wall plates over the basement.
Then we hit upon the idea of dropping from the attic into the stud bay a plastic bread bag tied to a string. Once the bag was at the bottom of the cavity, it made a big, easy-to-snag target that was quickly caught with our fishtape and pulled into the basement.
