As a general contractor, I occasionally have to install moldings. A recurring problem is the lack of solid backing. Either the stud isn’t where I need it, or a curvy wall requires more points of attachment than that provided by the studs. In these situations I affix the trim to the drywall or plaster by driving pairs of nails at opposing angles, as shown in the drawing. A nail driven straight into drywall will work itself out, but if cross-nailed in this manner, the nail will hold firmly.
