Whenever I install a lockset, 1 rub a little bit of pencil lead on the edge of the latch, as shown in the drawing . Then I turn the knob to retract the latch, close the door until it’s hard against the doorstop and release the knob. The latch then bumps into the door jamb, leaving a graphite mark. This mark shows me where the leading edge of the strike plate should go.
