Chris Sturm’s tip on Wing-wall reinforcementlooks effective, but I think the method my crew uses to accomplish the same goal is easier. Instead of using a cast-concrete post to stiffen the wall, we use a steel post. As shown in the drawing, we have a local metal shop fabricate a post out of steel tubing that is 6 in. shorter than the wall. The post is drilled on 12-in. centers and has a 1/4-in. steel baseplate for 1/2-in. bolts.
Once the steel post is bolted to the floor, we bolt the adjacent studs to the post. Then the outside corner of the wall is capped with a piece of steel track to act as backing for the drywall finish. We prefer this method because it eliminates the delay of having to work with concrete.
