On a recent job replacing a pair of double-hung windows, I found myself looking for an insulative material to fill the gaps around the window frames. My search led me to some scraps of carpet padding that had been tossed into the Dumpster outside. Thinking I might have found the answer to the air-infiltration problem around the windows, I rescued some of the scraps and tried them out. Sure enough, the foam compressed well for a good fit without bowing the frame. Because the pad was made of recycled material, this use allowed it to be recycled again.
