I use a couple of pieces of indoor-outdoor carpet to protect the shingles whenever I have some work to do on a roof. For example, I recently reshingled the sides of a dormer, and I used a 6-ft. by 8-ft. piece of the carpet as a place to kneel as I worked and to spread my tools on. The rubberized backing on the carpet grips the shingles like a pair of hiking boots, and the stuff is soft enough to be a lot more comfortable than pressing my knees against the abrasive hide of an asphalt shingle. Also, a light-colored carpet makes a much cooler place to work than a field of dark shingles soaking up the sun.
