I built my house on a tight budget, but I still gave it some customized touches that set it apart from neighboring houses. For house numbers, I used my computer. First, I selected a typeface that I liked, typed in the numbers and then printed them out at the size that I wanted. Next I made a cardboard template of the numbers and used rubber cement to affix the template to the bottom rail of the front door. With the gray spray paint that I’d used on details elsewhere on the front porch, I sprayed the cutout numbers. Then I removed the stencil, and after the paint dried, I rubbed away the leftover rubber cement.
