Sometimes a shaft, be it wood or metal, needs an accurately drilled cross hole in it for some type of pin, such as an axle. In the past, I’ve tried various methods to bore such a hole. But drill press, dial indicators and center punch have left something to be desired: accuracy.
For my last such project, I used my drill press and my self-centering doweling jig (see drawing). Result: The finished shaft lined up perfectly with its pins.
