Because a lot of my work involves exterior repairs on historic buildings, I need to carry an extension ladder on my pickup on an almost permanent basis. To prevent the ladder from walking away — a common occurrence in my neighborhood — I secure the ladder to the railof my cargo rack with a bicycle U-lock. As shown in the drawing, the U-lock fits easily around the rails and one set of rungs. It goes on and off quickly, and being plastic-coated, the lock doesn’t damage the camper shell. As an added benefit, if my ladder’s ever stolen, the lock manufacturer says that they’ll buy me a new bicycle.
