Seeing a microwave oven sticking out of a cabinet brought to mind our simple solution to the problem. When we built our current house, we worked with the cabinetmaker and the builder to take advantage of the 3-1/2 in. of depth in the 2×4 wall behind the microwave.
The cabinetmaker cut a hole in the back of the oven’s cabinet. Meanwhile, the framer made sure the stud bay was open behind the oven, and the electrician placed the outlet inside the 2×4 framing on the side away from the oven’s vent cover to avoid interference with the oven’s plug. These modifications allowed us to keep the front of the microwave oven flush with the front of the cabinets.
