Setting a toilet single-handedly presents a tricky problem: If you don’t accurately line up the closet bolts with the holes in the base of the toilet bowl, you can damage the wax ring that seals the toilet to its flange. The drawing shows my solution to the dilemma.
I take a couple of inches of stiff wire and wrap it around the end of each closet bolt. This leaves a couple of wire feelers sticking up to act as guides, ensuring that the bowl is lined up correctly before the wax ring makes contact with the closet flange.
