I purchased a Porter-Cable inline detail sander to prep for painting the complicated trim on our Queen Anne Victorian. With downward pressure, the contoured rubber insert and stick-on sandpaper worked well on the ogee details around the window. But if I applied side pressure to the sander, the insert would pop out almost instantly. The fix was simple. As shown in the drawing, I drilled two 1/16-in. dia. holes in the plastic carrier and ran a pair of aluminum-head push pins through the holes into the rubber insert. The pins hold the insert firmly in place now when I work the side of the insert against a piece of trim.
