The drawing shows the trick we use to make sink cutouts in laminate counters. First, we draw the cutline on the counter. Then we use a spade bit to drill a hole a little larger than a hammer head inside the cutline. Using the hole as a starting point, we jigsaw halfway around the cutline, pull the saw and start the second half of the cut in the reverse direction. During the last few strokes, we insert the head of a hammer into the hole, using the handle to support the weight of the cutout. It’s now an easy matter to lift the piece out with the hammer.
