Years ago, I got fed up with the Stringline in my chalk box. The string would get fuzzy, clog in the box, leave fat layout lines and eventually break. My solution is to toss the line that comes with the chalk box and replace it with braided nylon fishing line.
I use the 72-lb. test line, which is sold around here at tackle shops as catfish line. This string is virtually unbreakable. It never gets fuzzy, it holds chalk well, and it leaves the cleanest, crispest line I’ve ever seen. And hooked up to a plumb bob, this line doesn’t let the plumb bob spin the way typical lines do.
