In roofing my new house, I decided to follow Emanuel Jannasch’s advice on Shingling from the top down. The method works well, but there is one detail that I’d like to add. Here in South Carolina, we have to contend with 100°F and higher temperatures during the summer. I found it necessary to place a narrow strip of plastic over the entire length of the self-sealing tar strips of each starter course. This prevented the row from bonding with its overlapping course of shingles before I could get back to nail it properly.
