When drilling into a ceiling, you’ve got dust falling into your eyes, into the drill motor and all over the client’s floor. I prevent the problem with the trick shown in the drawing. I drill a 1/4-in. dia. hole in the center of a cheap aluminum pie pan and run my bit through the hole. To keep the bit from chewing up the hole in the pie pan, I glued a washer to its bottom to reinforce the opening. In use, I hold the edge of the pan to keep it from turning.
