Triangle-Square Refinement
Improve the efficiency of your speed squares with a few quick grooves.
As do many other carpenters, I hope that the person who invented the triangle square ended up a rich man. In the past 20 years or so, these squares have become a standard in the trades because they are easy to use and convenient to carry. To make mine even more efficient, I filed grooves along the square leg to mark often-used dimensions. As shown in the drawing, I put grooves at 1-1/2 in., 3-1/2 in. and 5-1/2 in. Putting a pencil in the appropriate groove and then sliding the square down a board makes for quick layout marks.
