Making Treehouses for Kids in Wheelchairs
Vermont group creates treehouses for wheelchair-bound kids
Bill Allen, an insurance agent and board member for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, from Burlington, Vermont, was enjoying the view from a treehouse he’d built with a friend when he realized that something was wrong. “It’s too bad that a kid in a wheelchair can’t get up here!” So, he started Forever Young Treehouses (www.treehouses.org). With the help of John Connell, founder of the design/build school Yestermorrow (www.yestermorrow.org) and arborist Bill deVos, the organization has completed three treehouses that accomplish just that.
In this video you can meet Bill and John and see the houses they’ve created. For more on the subject read the Cross Section Department in the February/March 2003 issue of Fine Homebuilding (#153).
