Bruce Guertin’s tip Short-point measurement is great for odd-angled miters. But for the most common 45° miter, I simply hook my tape over the long point of the miter, then add the width of the molding to my measurement (or twice the width of the molding if I am measuring for the top piece of trim on a door or window). For trim profiles that taper inward, this approach has the added advantage of putting my pencil mark on the thick edge of the molding, making it easier to line up on the miter saw.
