This video tip is almost too good (or easy) to be true. To locate underground lines for water, sewer, gas, or electricity, reader Dannis T. Harbison from West Chester, Pa., uses this foolproof device demonstrated by Fine Homebuilding editor Justin Fink. You don’t need any fancy equipment to test it out either; you simply need two 6-in. pieces of copper pipe and a wire coat hanger.

Will it work for my poly water line going to my shop? It has no metal in it.
