Make Your Own Sanding Block
You can go to the hardware store and buy a sanding block, but better yet, you can make your own with materials you already have
Sanding blocks are readily available in every hardware store and home center across the country. Because they’re so quick and easy to make, though, why not make your own? In this short video, Fine Homebuilding editor Justin Fink demonstrates how he makes his own sanding block inspired by contributor M. Felix Marti’s tip.

..Except if the block is cupped. Best to first sand that block flat on both faces and the edges as well. You'll be able to use all four sides.
2 x 4's have rounded edges and wanted to add that this sanding block could be improved by running the edge faces through a table saw. It would be best to break the sharp corners on those edges. This will allow the sanding block to get into tight places.
