Before I remove a mirror that has been glued to a wall, I cover it with carpet protector. This is an adhesive-backed clear plastic sheet. If the glass should fracture, the plastic sheeting ensures that it stays together, making it much easier to handle and dispose of.
The last mirror I had to remove was 10 ft. by 38 in. and thoroughly stuck to the wall in several places. The mirror came down in many pieces, but safely bonded. The carpet protector worked like a charm and made the extra cost well worth it.
