Not long ago, I accidentally hit several of my favorite tools with a quick blast from a can of spray paint, giving them a black-speckled look. The cap was anchored so tightly to the paint can that in pulling it off, I couldn’t avoid hitting the nozzle. To avoid a repeat, I used a pair of shears to cut four evenly spaced slits in the inner-cap ring, as shown in the drawing above. Now when I put the cap back on the can, it stays in place and also can be removed easily.
