Coper Coping System Review
The Coper system uses a router to cope joints in flat moldings quickly and accurately
The Coper is a nearly foolproof system that uses a router to cope joints in flat moldings quickly and accurately. Here’s how works: A bearing-guided router bit cuts the cope joint by following a template that’s clamped beneath the molding. Where do you get the template? You make it. Now before you say “stupid idea,” hear this: Templates are easy to make. Everything you need to create and cut the coped molding profile is included with The Coper–except for the router.
After mixing together the supplied resin and hardener, you can cast templates for moldings up to 6 in. tall. I clamped a 5-1/2-in.-high baseboard template and molding into The Coper’s clamping station, chucked the kit’s bearing-guided bit in my router, and quickly cut several perfect copes. The clamping station even tilts the molding slightly to create a back cut.
Yes, making templates and waiting for the two-part Por-A-Kast mixture to cure takes 20 to 30 minutes. And the 1/4-in.-dia. router bit can’t cut smaller profiles accurately. All things considered, The Coper is a big time-saver if you have a lot of flat trim work to do.
