Architect Stephen Tilly crafts and uncommon speculative home that is influenced by its neighborhood.
Synopsis: To protect a building site in their Ogden Park neighborhood from overdevelopment, architect Stephen Tilly and Elizabeth Martin embarked on a project that ensured the new house would fit seamlessly into their historic district overlooking the Hudson River. The clapboard-and-shingle exterior echoes turn-of-the-century architecture, while the interior features a floor plan designed to conserve passive-solar heat and encourage natural light and views. Curves are one design element in this house that made construction an interesting challenge for its builder, Scott McBride: Many interior and exterior walls are curved, along with the eaves and cypress gutters, and a stairway that McBride steam-bent himself.
