A gracious home from the 1890s gets a new eat-in kitchen and a better connection to the yard and patio
This Georgian-revival house suffered from a cramped kitchen and an awkward main entry stymied by a mudroom and laundry. The configuration lacked a connection to the home’s gracious grounds. Plus, it contained no useful, functional space for the entire family. Mixing elements of the family’s vacation cottage in Maine and the original house, the new eat-in kitchen/family-room addition opens onto the patio and features a bay-window eating area that can accommodate everyone. Other welcome touches include a cupola of operable clerestory windows, a sizable pot rack, and utensil holders recessed into the kitchen counters.
