Pullout Shelves for Upper Cabinets
Pullout shelves make upper cabinets more accessible
While doing a full kitchen remodel, I decided to address the common problem of lost space in cabinets that are too high to be accessed easily. Even if you can see the cabinet shelf, most of the items on it are still out of reach. I designed my system so that each of the lower shelves in these cabinets is a full-extension pullout. Depending on the width of the cabinet, there are either one or two pullout shelves that can be pulled out one at a time, providing a full view from the side. This gives me full access to all the items on the shelf.
During the remodel, a few new cabinets were built to work within our new floor plan. All the facings and doors for both new and old cabinets are made of a combination of solid cherry and cherry plywood. On most of the cabinets, though, we reused the original white melamine casings. The pullout shelves are made of white melamine to match the reused originals, with full-extension 22-in. drawer slides.
