The tools I carry in my nail bags are like the starters on a basketball team: only the most productive ones make the cut. It has been years since a new tool broke into the starting lineup, but that may be about to change.
Once I dropped the fine-tooth Silky Gomboy saw into my nail pouch, I was surprised by how often I used it and how well it worked. When I was installing windows where the plywood sheathing overhung the 2x sill plate or when I needed to finish the bird’s-mouth cuts in roof rafters, the folding saw quickly solved the problem. I haven’t used the saw for interior finish work, but the blade is flexible and cuts cleanly enough that I wouldn’t hesitate to use it when trimming the bottoms of door casings for flooring to slide underneath.
The Silky Gomboy saw has interchangeable Japanese pull-saw-style blades, which can be purchased separately from the rubber-coated handle for between $22 and $29. The only thing I don’t like about this tool is its name. On a rough-and-tumble job site, I’m forced to hear myself ask, “Hey, Andy, do you have my Silky Gomboy?”
