Verde Petroleum-Free Oil Finish
Cost: $22 a quart; $55 a gallon
I guess you could say that the three-eyed-fish episode of The Simpsons really got to me. Ever since, I’ve avoided using harsh chemicals on the surfaces in and around my home. So I was interested to hear about Penofin’s latest product, Verde, a no-VOC, petroleum-free, semitransparent, penetrating oil finish that contains no heavy-metal compounds. According to the company, Verde is made with vegetable ester solvents, soy-based resins, and the same Brazilian rosewood oil found in all Penofin products. With no toxic ingredients or odors, the finish is safe for use around children and animals and can be cleaned up with soap and water.
Verde comes in 18 colors, from oak to ebony, and can be used for both exterior and interior wood applications, including decks, siding, fencing, furniture, floors, countertops, and cabinets. The finish is brushed or sprayed on to the surface of the wood and allowed to sit for 20 to 30 minutes before the excess is wiped away. Depending on climate, reapplication may be required every nine to 24 months on horizontal surfaces and three to five years on vertical surfaces. Verde blocks 99% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays and earns LEED credits for its no-VOC content.
