This double-ended nail set made by Spring Tools is brilliantly simple. It’s just two short nail sets connected with a strong spring. In use, the point of the nail set is held on the nail, and the back of the tool is pulled and released, “snapping” the nail below the surface. It takes two hands to use, just like the traditional set and hammer, but it has much less tendency to jump from the nail head and can be used in spots where there’s no room to swing a hammer. The tool is available in varying combinations of 1/32 in., 2/32 in., and 3/32 in., equivalent to Stanley’s yellow, red, and gray nail sets. At about $10, every finish carpenter should own one.
