During a recent kitchen remodel, my clients were looking for a place to store cutting boards, baking sheets, and serving trays. We decided it would make the most sense and provide the easiest access to store them vertically. The problem is that this requires a fair amount of space, a precious commodity in a kitchen. Meanwhile, the cabinet over the fridge is often an underused storage area because of its depth and height. It seemed like a good solution to two problems to use this space.
The cabinetmaker created slots spaced 1-1/2 in. along the top and bottom of a standard above-the-fridge cabinet. This allows for a variety of adjustable spacing increments to accommodate thick and thin items. We used 1/4-in.-thick hardboard to create the 24-in.-tall dividers.
